Gautham Rao

Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Gautham Rao is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Cardiovascular Data Science (CarDS) Lab in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. His research interests are a confluence of cardiovascular imaging, artificial intelligence, and clinical translational research, with a particular interest in developing clinically scalable and deployable artificial intelligence-based digital biomarkers in cardiovascular medicine.

He received his Medical Degree from the University of Oxford in the UK, having previously graduated with a Prize-winning First Class Honours MA (Oxon) in Medical Sciences, also at the University of Oxford. He attained Distinctions in his examinations and theses, with a top 10% ranking recognition during his pre-clinical training.

His broader research experience spans clinical, computational, and translational methods, including coronary phenotyping using photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) with Professor Charalambos Antoniades’ Group at Oxford. Additionally, he has worked in bioinformatics, proteomics, transcriptomics, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and trial sequential analysis, with research ranging from antisense oligonucleotide (PiP6e-PMO) therapies for Duchenne muscular dystrophy in mdx murine models to outcomes-based research.

Alongside his research, he has pursued clinical experience in cardiovascular medicine in both the United Kingdom and the United States of America, including at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Centre in Bethesda, as well as Mayo Clinic Rochester and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, where he received consecutive Honors for his Advanced Clinical Cardiology Clerkships and Sub-Internships. These experiences fortified his interest in using data science and artificial intelligence to address clinically meaningful problems in cardiovascular care.

At the CarDS Lab at Yale, Gautham is interested in applying artificial intelligence and advanced data-driven methods to cardiovascular imaging and clinical care, with a particular focus on how AI tools can be effectively integrated into physician workflows and decision-making.

Outside of medicine and research, Gautham is a classically trained guitarist and keen musician, with interests in classical, blues, jazz, and contemporary music.
